Well, the easiest would be putting on a set of those hunting boots for rocky terrain. But, this can be impractical if they're just going out for a couple of minutes.
I have Goldens and they tend to pick up a lot of snow (not to mention burs and other junk) if I let the hair between their toes get too long. I normally trim the hair on their feet about every three or four weeks, and this helps a lot.
