Well, the first thing I'd recommend is don't coddle the dog. You would be rewarding him for his fear behavior.
Secondly, you need to make it appear that the loud noises are a normal and expected condition, and that it's no big deal.
If some family members are wary or afraid of thunderstorms they should be kept away from the dog. The dog will read their anxiety.
